I just moved so I packed away most of my polishes so I only used Barry M Matt White as the background colour and the rest is done in acrylic paint. I love how fun these look and halfway through doing them they look like members of Kiss so that's interesting to see.

Sugar Skulls
ReplyDeleteAnd actually, Sugar Skulls are part of the Latino tradition for Dia De Los Muertos. By taking these and making them into an accessory when it is not the holiday, you are actually culturally appropriating them by using them in the incorrect way. It's very sad, actually and kind of offensive to the Latino tradition.
Thanks for telling me what they're called, I know most people don't know the proper name for them. I'm really not trying to be offensive at all, although i know nothing about the tradition or holiday, I thought that they would make a nice design, you don't have to like them, I do. Sorry if I have offended you but I can't change the fact that they're done now, sorry.
DeleteDon't be sorry. Your nails look great!! If she doesn't like them she doesn't have to subscribe to your site.
DeleteSkulls are used I lots of different things.
I never said they weren't well done. Nor did I say I didn't like them. But what I don't like is the cultural appropriation in general of Sugar Skulls. When used appropriately, they serve as a great tradition. They are part of a specific culture honoring the people that they know who have died. When ANYONE uses them in a different way, it's basically as offensive as taking a very dear cultural tradition to a specific person and using it in the wrong way.
DeleteIf she truly is offended, then she needs to blame pop culture, because sugar skulls are everywhere right now.. I think they are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteDifferent anon from above just so ya know. They are super beautiful and I definitely agree with you. Pop culture is definitely to blame. But who is behind pop culture? People are. And if people are using it incorrectly, then is it right for EVERYONE to use it incorrectly? No. Charlie, you used something that you said you had no idea what they were about. No one is blaming you for that. Nor was it wrong. Now you are educated on what they are, how they are used, and the cultural significance of it. So from now on, you know just how special they are and how exactly and when they are used. They're not trendy. They're a part of a specific culture's religious holiday.
